Practicing the Way of Jesus: The Command to Love

Introduction

In our ongoing sermon series on making a difference by practicing the way of Jesus, we delve into a passage that lies at the very heart of our faith. This passage from John 13:34-35 is simple yet profound, encapsulating the essence of what it means to be a follower of Christ. Jesus commands us to love one another, a directive that remains as relevant today as it was in the first century. This command is not just a suggestion but a cornerstone of our faith, meant to be the most powerful tool in our Christian walk.

The Context of Jesus' Command

What Happened Before the Command?

Before issuing this command, Jesus washed His disciples' feet, demonstrating humility and servanthood. He explained that if a master acts as a humble servant, His followers should do the same. This act set the stage for His command to love one another, emphasizing that love is the primary and most powerful tool of a Christian's faith.

Why is This Command Important?

Jesus stated, "As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." This love is not just for fellow believers but extends to everyone we encounter. If the world does not see our love for each other and others, we will never make a difference for Jesus.

Understanding Jesus' Love

What Kind of Love is Jesus Talking About?

The love Jesus commands is divine in nature—selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional. It goes beyond human understanding and capabilities. This love is birthed in our hearts when we surrender our lives to Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to dwell in us. It is not limited to our interactions within the church but extends to everyone we meet, including family members, coworkers, neighbors, and even strangers.

How Did Jesus Demonstrate This Love?

Jesus' love was active, transformative, and inclusive. He reached out to all people, regardless of their social status or past actions. He forgave sinners and saw the inherent worth and dignity in everyone. Our love must also see the value in every person we encounter, even those who are difficult to love.

What is Agape Love?

The term "agape" used in John 13 signifies unconditional, sacrificial love. It is the same love mentioned in John 3:16 and 1 Corinthians 13. This love seeks the highest good in others, is patient, kind, and keeps no record of wrongs. It always protects, perseveres, and hopes.

How Does Jesus' Love Transform Us?

Jesus' love changes our hearts, minds, attitudes, and actions. It makes us new creations, enabling us to shed light in darkness, give hope to the despairing, and bring peace to those in turmoil. This love is enduring and steadfast, never failing regardless of our actions.

Living Out Jesus' Love Today

How Can We Be Like Jesus?

Living out Jesus' love today means mirroring His compassion, kindness, patience, gentleness, and selflessness. It involves reflecting His light in our homes, workplaces, and schools, letting others see Jesus through us. We become His hands and feet, serving others with humility and grace.

What Does Christlike Action Look Like?

Christlike action involves practical, tangible expressions of love. It means building relationships that reflect His love, grace, and truth. We must treat others with kindness and respect, regardless of who they are or where they come from. This includes loving those who are difficult to love, even our enemies.

How Can We Cultivate Christlike Relationships?

Cultivating Christlike relationships involves embodying a Christlike character. It means allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us and mold us into the person God wants us to be. We must deepen our relationship with Jesus and share His love with everyone we encounter.

Life Application

How Can We Apply This Love in Our Lives?

To make a difference for Jesus, we must embody His love in our daily lives. This week, challenge yourself to:

1. Reflect on Your Relationships: Are you showing Christlike love to your family, coworkers, and neighbors? How can you improve?

2. Actively Serve Others: Find a way to serve someone in need, whether through a kind word, a helping hand, or a generous act.

3. Pray for a Loving Heart: Ask God to fill your heart with His love, enabling you to love others unconditionally.

Questions to Ponder

1. Do people in your community, school, or workplace see Jesus living through you?

2. How can you demonstrate selfless, sacrificial love in your daily interactions?

3. Are there "difficult" people in your life that you need to love more intentionally?

By embracing and living out Jesus' command to love, we can make a profound difference in our world, reflecting His light and love to everyone we encounter. Let's strive to help all people discover and deepen their relationship with Jesus while sharing His love with our community and beyond.
