Own the Vision: Gifted to Serve

Writer's picture: John JoinerJohn Joiner

Each of us has a unique calling, a special role in God’s kingdom. And today, I want to encourage you to think about the gifts God has given you and how you can use them to make a difference.

The Bible tells us in 1 Peter 4:10, "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." That means you’ve been given something special—something no one else has—and God wants you to use it, not just for yourself, but to serve others. The question isn’t whether you have a gift; the question is, how are you using it?

When we talk about using our gifts, it’s not about being in the spotlight. It’s about being faithful stewards—caretakers of the grace God gives us. Each of us has a role to play, whether it’s greeting newcomers, setting up for events, or leading a small group. It all matters. Romans 12:6reminds us that we each have different gifts, but the same purpose: to serve and build up the body of Christ.

Some of you might be wondering, "But what is my gift? How do I figure that out?" You’re not alone in that. A good first step is taking a spiritual gifts assessment, which can help you understand where you might be most effective in serving. If you’re someone who loves encouraging others, maybe your gift is in hospitality or mentoring. If you’re great at organizing, we’ve got a place for you too. There’s a role for everyone here.

Next Sunday, I’d love to invite you to our Gifted to Serve class at 9:00 AM in the Sanctuary. This session will help you discover your gifts and find ways to serve right here at Heritage Church. Whether you're a natural leader, a great teacher, or someone who can offer a warm smile, there's a place for you to make an impact.

Here’s the truth—every act of service makes a difference. It might be something as simple as a clean chair, a well-organized event, or a kind word, but these small things can completely change someone’s experience at church. When we serve, we aren’t just helping others; we’re reflecting God’s love and grace. And the more we serve, the more we inspire others to do the same.

So, let me leave you with a challenge this week: Reflect on your gifts. Ask yourself, “What am I good at? How can I use these talents to serve others?” Then, take a step. Volunteer at a church event, offer to help a neighbor, or even just take a moment to encourage someone.

If you’re unsure where to start, come to our Gifted to Serve class next Sunday. I believe that when we embrace our gifts and use them to serve others, we not only glorify God but also find a deeper sense of purpose. What if this is the moment that changes everything—for you, for our church, and for our community?

Let’s embrace the calling God has placed on our lives. I can’t wait to see how God uses each of us in the days ahead. I hope to see you next Sunday at 9:00 AM.

Blessings,

Pastor John Joiner
