Lessons from John the Baptist's Journey

Following Jesus for the right reasons isn’t always easy. I know I’ve had times when I’ve focused on the benefits of faith rather than the deeper purpose of my relationship with Christ. It's kind of like a child who loves the comfort of a protective parent but gets frustrated when it’s not convenient. I’ve found myself wanting the blessings of following Jesus without fully embracing the mission He has for me.

John the Baptist’s story stands out to me because, despite his incredible role in God's plan, he lived in a way that was so simple and humble. He wore camel's hair, ate locusts and honey, and lived out in the wilderness. But, he was fulfilling a prophecy from Isaiah, preparing the way for Jesus. In many ways, John was just like us—ordinary, but called by God for something extraordinary. He didn’t need fancy robes or wealth to be used by God. His faithfulness to God’s call, regardless of his circumstances, is what mattered most.

What strikes me most about John is how he didn’t rely on his outward appearance or position, but instead, trusted in God’s power working through him. His life reminds me that God often works through the faithful, the humble, and the obedient, rather than those with worldly power or influence. In my own life, I sometimes need to ask myself: "Am I trying to rely on my own strength, or am I submitting to God’s purpose for me?"

Even John faced moments of doubt. After being thrown in prison, he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” This was a man who boldly proclaimed Jesus as the Messiah, yet in his difficult circumstances, he questioned if Jesus was the one. It reminds me that it’s okay to have doubts and to bring those doubts to Jesus. He doesn’t condemn us for questioning; He meets us where we are.

What’s even more challenging to accept is that Jesus didn’t promise John’s release from prison. Instead, He pointed to the miracles happening around Him—healing the sick, giving sight to the blind, and raising the dead. Jesus was showing that His Kingdom was advancing, but that His ways often don’t align with our plans. Following Jesus doesn’t always guarantee comfort or ease. I’ve had my own moments where my plans haven’t worked out the way I hoped, and I’m learning that it’s in those moments of disappointment that God shapes me the most.

I’ve realized how often I fall into the trap of seeking the benefits of following Jesus rather than focusing on who He is. There are times when I’ve found myself seeking the gift instead of the Giver, desiring provision without fully appreciating the Provider. It’s so easy to chase after comfort or breakthrough without remembering the true source of those things—Jesus Himself. He is the treasure, not the blessings He gives.

This week, I’m asking myself some tough questions:

• Am I following Jesus for who He is, or just for what He can do for me?

• When my circumstances don’t line up with my expectations, do I still trust in God’s plan?

• What “benefits” am I seeking that might distract me from a deeper, more genuine relationship with Jesus?

Here’s my challenge to myself—and to you: Let’s make a conscious effort to focus on developing our relationship with Jesus, not just seeking specific outcomes or benefits. Every time we pray this week, let’s start by expressing gratitude for who God is rather than what He can provide. Let’s lean into the relationship He offers, knowing that the true treasure in following Him is found in His presence, not in what He gives.
